Maumbury Rings, Dorchester

I’d seen the Maumbury Rings many times on documentaries but had never made it to visit them. We spend lots of time down in Dorset and it was on my list for a while.

A couple of minutes walk from Dorchester town centre, you’ll find the Maumbury Rings. We might have walked 15 minutes in the wrong direction, but it was well worth it in the end (even though it was hammering down with rain!)

The rings have so much history. They date back to the late Neolithic period where a Henge once stood.

When the Romans came, they turned the rings into an amphitheatre around the 1st century AD. This was one of the largest in Britain, but one of the smallest in the Roman empire.

Adjustments were made to the rings in the 17th century and the area was used as an artillery fort during the English civil war.

They are definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
